![]() Some of the authors in the volume infuse their writing with unexplained metaphors from Zarathustra or introduce new metaphors of their own. ![]() One general remark is worth making before discussing the individual essays. Those who would like to better understand Zarathustra will gain by reading them. Some of the essays in this volume help us, either by interpreting difficult passages or by presenting interpretive hypotheses that allow us to make better sense of the text. ![]() Help in solving its riddles would replace our puzzlement with a better understanding of Nietzsche's philosophy, and give us the greater appreciation that one has for a good riddle when one knows the answer. Even as its enchanting images and metaphors draw us in, they often leave us puzzled about its philosophical content. ![]() This is part of why Zarathustra is both delightful to read and difficult to understand. As James Luchte writes in his introduction, Thus Spoke Zarathustra "simultaneously plays in the fields of literature and of philosophy" (1). ![]()

The narrator is very proper and keeps things moving despite the sometimes slow pace of the narrative and though it ends too abruptly for my liking it did give me a decent case of the creeps. As the eeriness continues to settle in, I found it absorbing and a little terrifying and even slightly humorous as one of our protagonists attempts to make excuses for everything happening to them – even though we know he doesn’t really believe any of his own words. Unfortunately they’ve chosen the wrong location. They set up camp somewhere on a small island. Two friends head out on a canoeing adventure ignoring, and slightly oblivious to, all of the warning signs that they should go ANYWHERE but where they’re headed. The first hour basically sets the scene for the nightmarish dreamlike conclusion. ![]() The beginning is filled with an abundance of descriptive prose. The Stand is one of Barnes & Noble’s Collectible Editions classics. Scott, but before it was released, I was deep into The Stand, finally writing my American fantasy epic, set in a plague-decimated USA. I remembered a news reporter saying, "If the winds had been blowing the other way, there was Salt Lake City." This incident later served as the basis of a movie called Rage, starring George C. That got me remembering a chemical spill in Utah that killed a bunch of sheep (these were canisters on their way to some burial ground they fell off the truck and ruptured). I never forgot the gruesome footage of the test mice shuddering, convulsing, and dying, all in twenty seconds or less. Then, slowly after my wife and kids and I moved to Boulder, Colorado, I saw a 60 Minutes segment on CBW (chemical-biological warfare). This is one of the books that epitomises the human condition, cheer the triumphs, laugh with friends, cry for the losses. For a long time-ten years, at least-I had wanted to write a fantasy epic like The Lord of the Rings, only with an American setting. ![]() ![]() ![]() The general plot is very interesting - essentially, the last remaining man on Earth must survive a world that is now inhabited by various types of vampire like humans that are out to destroy him.Ĭertain parts of the book were outstanding. The book takes you there, too, but reading it makes Smith's performance all the more impressive. What the movie does surprisingly well (and this is a testament to Will Smith as an actor) is capture the arc of emotions Neville experiences in his horrific situation. (The movie ended the way you think the book is going to end but doesn't.) So, OK, maybe they're not similar beyond the basic premise.Īnyway, the book was more satisfying with its take on the "science" of vampirism, and the ending was more honest and creative. The nature of the vampires is different: classic conception of the vampire v. hyper-intelligent black guy in the movie. The two versions are similar in many ways, but the characters are different: regular white guy in the book v. I made sure to give myself some time between seeing the film version and reading the book (I always prefer to see the movie first novels always add to the story and usually improve upon it). ![]() ![]() ![]() So when she receives a tender email from the typically monosyllabic hunk, she’s not sure what to make of it.įaire returns to Willow Creek, and Stacey comes face-to-face with the man with whom she’s exchanged hundreds of online messages over the past nine months.
